S Korean Demand For Construction Materials To Drop In 2005
South Korean demand for construction materials is likely to continue to drop this year despite government measures to stimulate the construction business, a trade association predicted Monday.
Domestic demand for steel, ready mixed concrete, cement and other construction materials is expected to fall 0.5 per cent to 5.9 per cent, the Construction Association of Korea (CAK) said.
Buffeted by the sluggish domestic economy, demand for construction materials dipped 5.7 per cent to 7.5 per cent in 2004 from a year ago.
"Demand for construction materials is likely to remain in the dumps this year because of a deepening slump in the housing market," a CAK official said.
However, the anticipated downturn in demand may moderate in the second half when the effect of stimulus measures is likely to begin to materialize, he added.
The government has announced a package of measures, including large infrastructure projects, in a bid to help the construction industry make a soft landing this year.
Demand for ready mixed concrete is likely to shed 0.5 per cent to 138 million cubic meters, with that for cement predicted to drop 3.6 per cent to 53 million tons.
